Chambers Capital Group, successfully tendered competitively to be appointed as the civils contractor to undertake full turnkey delivery of all Civil engineering works for the Sizing John, Battery Energy Storage development in St Helens by the IPC MC Ethical Power, with the key project stakeholders Varco, Arenko, and National Grid. 
The scheme at the time of construction was the largest BESS project under construction in England and the second largest in the United Kingdom. Chambers Capital commenced work from the stage of an open field building the CDM compound with contract works including: Bulk Earthworks Cut & Fill, Drainage, Access roads, Ground Engineering, all concrete works including transformer bund and all concrete bases in the step down client substation compound (ICP works at 33kV/132kV), all BESS and MV Skid bases, duct & trough installation, perimeter fencing and below-ground earthing.

Sizing John will support National Grid Energy System Operator (NGESO) increase resilience of the UK's energy grid by balancing the power grid as more intermittent renewables come online, by providing a suite of fast-acting flexibility services. The project will also trade on wholesale power markets to help load shift excess renewable energy into periods of peak demand, as well as support energy security through participating in the capacity market.

The project included a 600-metre off site route to connect the client’s substation to National Grid’s network, as well as procurement and commissioning of the 132kV substation and auxiliary transformer on site.​

The Sizing John project comes at a highly relevant time for the UK, not only in supporting the government’s move towards net zero, but by providing much needed new-build investment into a storage sector that is integral to managing the supply and demand flow of renewable energy.
